AGE OF IRON

Maiden Castle is one of the largest and most complex Iron Age hill forts in Europe. It has huge ramparts, mostly built in the 1st century BC, which protected hundreds of residents. From the very first human activity here (over 6,000 years ago) a series of amazing discoveries have been unearthed. There are Neolithic remnants from 3500 BC, a late Iron Age cemetery and even the remains of a Roman Temple from the 4th century AD. Now resting quietly, this land has seen furious and deadly battles, and also trade, industry and the rise and fall of its own society. There’s something mesmerising about this ancient site, the curves and flow of it’s structure and the quiet memory in the mist…

The ‘Echoscape’ below created by English Heritage gives an audio accompaniment to the background and history of Maiden Castle and its inhabitants.
